Fighting for a fairer SCOTUS and taking on Big Oil

Fighting for Judge Jackson ahead of her confirmation hearing

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court is nomination is heading to the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she will receive a hearing March 21-25. With the hearing happening so soon, we focused our efforts this week on supporting this historic nomination with letter campaigns to Senate Judiciary Committee members.

Here at Daily Kos, we recognize the far-reaching impact decisions on the bench have on millions of Americans, so judicial campaigns are one of our most important priorities. With a seat on the Supreme Court (SCOTUS), Judge Jackson could help decide many issues that directly impact us, including the freedom to vote, abortion access, prisons and policing, housing, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Jackson will not be able to rule on abortion cases currently in front of the court, like the Texas’ six-week abortion ban and Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, which has the potential to unravel Roe v. Wade. However, if confirmed, the future justice will certainly rule on other abortion cases. Just this month, the Florida legislature passed a clearly unconstitutional 15-week abortion ban, only the latest in a series of states’ attempts to ban abortion. West Virginia and Arizona have also advanced 15-week bans in 2022.

Yet draconian laws limiting reproductive choice are just one area where a Justice Jackson could have an important impact.

Horrific bills and policies targeting LGBTQ+ youth are also sweeping the country. Florida Republicans passed legislation that would ban classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in K-12 classrooms, the much-criticized ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill—legislation Georgia has already copied.

It’s quite possible that any of these oppressive and unnecessary bills—or ones we haven’t even seen yet—will make their way to the Supreme Court.

We need justices like Jackson, a former public defender—the first nominated to the Court—who has worked tirelessly to shape criminal justice policy. Confirming Judge Jackson is crucial to ensuring the Supreme Court actually reflects the people and communities most impacted by its rulings.

With three justices appointed by Donald Trump, we need to bolster the highest bench in the land with strong, committed advocates for human rights and equal justice for all. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is exactly that kind of nominee.

The Tax Man Comes Knocking on Big Oil’s Door

Long before Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Big Oil was raking in massive profits. In 2021, fossil fuel giant Exxon Mobil announced its biggest profit in seven years. Now that Russia’s unjustified aggression has shocked energy markets with soaring oil prices, fossil fuel conglomerates are happy to take advantage of consumers by jacking up gas prices even further. And while Big Oil companies line their coffers with obscene profits, their tax burden continues to be mind-bogglingly low.

Congressional Democrats are fighting back against Big Oil, led by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Ro Khanna. They’ve announced a “windfall tax” that would be levied on profits made by fossil fuel companies in response to the Ukraine invasion. Additionally, it would tax those profits made from rising inflation. This tax is designed to discourage hungry oil companies from artificially inflating gas prices, and it’s one of the few things Congress or the Biden administration can do to deter price gouging. As Americans are anxious about prices at the pump, there’s no better time to hold oil companies accountable.

Daily Kos is joining 198 Methods, Americans for Tax Fairness, Inequality Media Civic Action, National Campaign for Transit Justice, Progressive Democrats of America, and TakeItBack.Org to call on Congress to pass the Big Oil windfall tax, and reinvest that money into programs that will accelerate an equitable translation to a renewable energy economy.
